ResultsoftheresearchwerepublishedinarecenteditionofTheJournalofNeuroscience.

Thethalamusisacentralareathatrelatestotherestofthebrainandactsasthepostoffice,saidHasan,firstauthorofthepaper.Italsoisanareathathastheleastamountofdamagefromlesions(损害)inthebrainbutweseevolumeloss,soitappearsotherbraindamagerelatedtothediseaseisalsooccurring.

Researchershaveknownthatthethalamuslosesvolumeinsizewithtypicalaging,whichacceleratesafterage70.TheUTHealthmultidisciplinaryteamspurposewastoassessiftherewasmorevolumelossinpatientswithmultiplesclerosis,whichcouldexplainthedementia-relateddeclineassociatedwiththedisease.
